Empowering Young Minds Through Awareness: A Talk on Hormones, Health & PCOS at My Alma Mater

Empowering Young Minds Through Awareness: A Talk on Hormones, Health & PCOS at My Alma Mater

Published

As healthcare professionals, our responsibility extends beyond clinics and hospitals. Educating young people about their health empowers them to make informed decisions and build healthier futures. One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist has been the opportunity to engage with students and create awareness about important health issues affecting young women today.

Recently, I had the privilege of returning to my alma mater, P.C. Jabin Science College, Hubballi, to deliver an awareness session on "Hormones and Health", with a special focus on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), in association with Revolution Minds.

Having collaborated with Revolution Minds since 2019 on various initiatives related to women's health and personal growth, this event was particularly meaningful to me.

A Special Homecoming

Returning to the institution where I spent some of the most formative years of my life was a truly nostalgic experience.

Walking through familiar corridors brought back cherished memories of my student days. What made the occasion even more special was the warm welcome extended by the faculty members, many of whom had taught and mentored me during my PUC years.

I was deeply touched when my professors introduced me to the students, recalling not only my academic journey but also my active participation in extracurricular activities. Their words were a reminder of the invaluable role teachers play in shaping the future of their students and the strong foundation that educational institutions provide.

Creating Awareness About Hormonal Health

The session focused on increasing awareness about hormonal health among adolescents and young adults—an area often surrounded by myths, misconceptions, and limited understanding.

During the talk, I discussed:

  • The role of hormones in overall health
  • How hormonal imbalances affect physical and emotional well-being
  • Common hormonal disorders affecting young women
  • The importance of recognizing symptoms early
  • Lifestyle factors that influence hormonal balance

A major portion of the session was dedicated to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting young women today.

Understanding PCOS: A Growing Health Concern

PCOS affects millions of women worldwide and can present with a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Excessive weight gain
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Excess facial or body hair growth
  • Hair thinning
  • Difficulty with fertility in some cases

Many young women are unaware that these symptoms may indicate an underlying hormonal condition requiring medical attention.

I emphasized that early diagnosis and appropriate management can significantly improve long-term health outcomes and reduce the risk of future complications.

An Engaging and Interactive Session

One of the most encouraging aspects of the event was the enthusiasm shown by the students.

The interactive question-and-answer session generated thoughtful discussions on topics such as:

  • Can exercise be continued during menstruation?
  • Which physical activities are beneficial during periods?
  • How does lifestyle impact hormonal health?
  • What are the warning signs of PCOS?
  • When should medical evaluation be sought?

The students displayed genuine curiosity and a willingness to learn, making the session both engaging and impactful.

Lifestyle: The Foundation of Hormonal Wellness

A key message of the session was that hormonal health is closely linked to daily lifestyle choices.

Students were encouraged to focus on:

✔ Regular physical activity

✔ Balanced nutrition

✔ Adequate sleep

✔ Stress management

✔ Maintaining a healthy body weight

Rather than relying on quick fixes, I encouraged the adoption of sustainable lifestyle habits that support long-term health and well-being.

Breaking Myths and Encouraging Early Action

Many symptoms associated with PCOS and hormonal imbalances are often dismissed or normalized.

I highlighted that symptoms such as:

  • Irregular periods
  • Persistent acne
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Hair loss

Should not be ignored.

Seeking professional medical advice early can help identify underlying causes and allow timely intervention before complications develop.

Beyond PCOS: Promoting Women's Health Awareness

While PCOS was a major focus, the session also served as a platform to discuss broader aspects of women's health and preventive care.

In today's fast-paced world, lifestyle-related disorders are becoming increasingly common among adolescents and young adults. Educational initiatives like these play a vital role in helping young people understand their health and make informed decisions.

Awareness is often the first step toward prevention.

A Memorable Experience

The most rewarding part of the event was knowing that the information shared could positively influence the health choices of young individuals.

I am grateful to the management, faculty, and students of P.C. Jabin Science College for their warm hospitality and for making the event such a memorable experience.

Returning to my alma mater allowed me not only to reconnect with my roots but also to contribute to the institution that played an important role in shaping my personal and professional journey.

Looking Ahead

As healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility to extend our efforts beyond treatment and actively participate in community education.

Awareness programs, health talks, and preventive healthcare initiatives have the power to create lasting change and healthier communities.

I look forward to continuing such outreach activities and contributing towards a healthier, better-informed, and empowered younger generation.

Educate. Empower. Prevent.

Because informed health choices today create healthier lives tomorrow.
